To the Transgender and Non-Binary Community

Oct 23, 2018

You #WontBeErased! We see you and we fight with you!

In response to the NY Times article on Sunday announcing that the Department of Health and Human Services plans to essentially erase the estimated 1.4 million Americans who identify as transgender or non-binary, we want you to know St Pete Pride stands with you.

While the fight for equality has proven to be a long and winding road, we will not let this administration’s repeated attempts to deny your civil rights deter us in celebrating the pride and resiliency of you – as you are a vibrant part of our LGBT community. We support you. Your future is bright.

As an organization, we are working to raise visibility and advocate for the trans and non-binary community. For the past two years, we have proudly marched alongside our trans and non-binary friends as they and their families have led our St Pete Pride Parade in the TransPride March.

No matter what negative and hateful rhetoric you are hearing, we will work to ensure we turn the tide of hatred and bigotry. We call on our local community to stand with the trans and non-binary community. We can make extraordinary progress in the hearts of the American people for equality when we all stand together.

Your community IS our community. We must support the organizations and initiatives working to elevate the trans and non-binary community during these tumultuous times.

In less than a month, we will join in solidarity with the trans and non-binary community for Trans Day of Remembrance. Violence and erasure is a daily struggle for our trans and non-binary community.

Please join us at St. Pete City Hall on Tuesday, November 20 that 6:30 pm for the Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil as we remember the twenty-two known transgender people murdered in our country in last twelve months, including 5 in Florida – more than any other state.

We must never forget why it is so important to continue to fight for equality. You #WontBeErased! We will not let hate win!!
