St. Petersburg, FL, May 23, 2019 – St Pete Pride is thrilled to release the 2019 TransPride March commemorative t-shirt featuring artwork by Elliott Darrow, a 21-year-old transgender artist who grew up in St. Petersburg.
“I feel really lucky to live in a community that is becoming more accepting of all identities. Pride started as marches. The Trans March is so incredibly empowering. Having thousands of people scream that they love you just for being you is an experience that sticks with you even through the toughest of times.” Darrow said.
Darrow’s design depicts the words “Trans” in the shape of a heart. “There needs to be more love within our community,” says Darrow. For marchers the heart may inspire many meanings, but for Darrow the design is a symbol for living as your true and authentic identity. “I hope the love we show this summer at Pride for trans individuals will continue on through acts of allyship in everyday life.”
Nathan Bruemmer, founder and organizer of the TransPride March, is inspired by Darrow’s design. “The fight for equality is life saving for so many, especially for the trans community, and the work to end hatred, bigotry, and discrimination is often ugly. What a breath of fresh air to see a simple ask and a clear message from the next generation – to ground us all in more love.”
Organizers are partnering again this year with Flying Boat Brewery to host TRANSTASTIC, a transgender and ally, family-friendly TransPride March kick-off event on Friday, June 21st from 5:30 – 8:00pm. The event will include a DJ, food truck, local musician Jami Gee, and a short film provided by the Tampa Bay International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Early registration check-in and t-shirt pick-up will be available at the event.
TechData, Metro Inclusive Health, and Macy’s are this year’s sponsors of the St Pete Pride TransPride March. The first 1,000 pre-registered marchers will receive Darrow’s artwork on a FREE T-shirt designed by Dash Creative. Organizers encourage everyone to pre-register. Only pre-registered marchers can be guaranteed a t-shirt. Check-in for the TransPride March will be from 4:30-6:00pm at Vinoy Park.
